The white patches on the tongue are harmless but they look disgusting to some people. Papillae are the name of these types of coatings. The tongue’s external becomes irritated and it traps the food scraps, bacteria and dead cells between them. This causes bitter taste and bad breath in the mouth. It is not a serious condition as it passes after some time and day to day brushing and tongue cleaning can fasten the process.

The causes of papillae are bacterial infection, fever, congenital heart disease, reaction to antibiotics and steroids, bad oral hygiene, consumption of spicy or soft food, Candida yeast infection, regular drinking and smoking, dehydration and dry mouth.
In order to prevent papillae you shouldn’t consume too much sugar and dairy products. If you have patches, you should scrap them with a toothbrush or tongue cleaner and rinse. You should consume vegetables and fruits as they can clean the patches. You should also brush the teeth two times a day and drink a lot of water. Use mouthwash with antiseptic properties after your meals to stop oral thrush.

Fortunately, you can treat the white patches at your own home with the following simple remedies:

*Oil pulling*

This method will remove the yeast from the mouth. It will also remove tartar, plaque and help with gum diseases. You will only need one tbs. of extra virgin coconut oil or sesame oil. Rinse the mouth for fifteen minutes with the oil and do not swallow. Spit it out and wash the mouth with warm water. After that, brush the teeth.

*Vegetable glycerin*

This remedy is the key if you have white patches or dry mouth. It brings moisture to the mouth and soothes the tongue. Put one tsp. of vegetable glycerin on the tongue and brush the tongue with a toothbrush for thirty to sixty minutes. Then, spit it out and rinse. You can use this method two times a day for one week to get better results.

*Salt*

The salt can help you eliminate bacteria and toxins from the mouth and as it has antiseptic properties, it can control the problems with the oral health. Mix one glass of warm water and one tsp. of salt. Stir and rinse the mouth. Gargle for one minute. Do it three to four days to eliminate the white patches.

 *Hydrogen peroxide*

This method can eliminate infections and bacteria and the white patches on the tongue. It will also whiten the teeth. You will need a toothbrush, one cup of water and 3% hydrogen peroxide. Mix the water and the hydrogen peroxide and brush with it the tongue, softly. Use it once a day for a week. Wash the toothbrush before and after using it.

*Probiotics*

If you have pathogens in the mouth like oral thrush, using beneficial bacteria can be very useful. The probiotics contain good bacteria which are more in number than the fungi. Use one capsule at night after you brush the teeth. Combine it with one tsp. of water. One minute before you gulp it down, rinse the mouth. You will notice the results the next morning. You can take this supplement only two times a day for a month. It will improve the gut and the bodily resistance.

Here are some extra tips for you:

-You can add a probiotic yogurt to the diet to avoid oral thrush;
-Consume green tea, 2-3 cups a day to improve the overall health;
-Take garlic supplements, but first, consult a doctor. Garlic has antifungal properties and can regulate the fungal infections.
