When we notice that there are white nuggets in the tonsils, we feel like there is something stuck in the throat. The white nuggets (tonsil stones), are something that many people struggle with nowadays. They develop when leftover food particles, dead skin cells, mucus and bacteria start to deposit in the tonsil crypts. They can be yellowish or whitish and squishy and soft. They can lead to breathing problems, difficulty swallowing food, throat irritation and bad breath.

If you don’t practice good oral hygiene, if the tonsils are too big or you suffer from chronic tonsil inflammation, the risk of tonsil stones is higher. Conventional treatment is surgical removal or tonsillectomy. But it does not guarantee that they will not re-occur. When you remove them, you actually eliminate a part of the immunity and allow viruses and bacteria to enter the body. Luckily, there are some other methods that can remove the tonsil stones at home, and here are some of them:

If the Q-tip is visible and big to reach the back of the throat, the tonsil stones can be removed very easily. Push the area of the tonsils gently with the Q-tip, until they are dislodged. Perform this in front of a mirror and applying enough pressure, they would pop out from behind the tonsil’s pockets.

*Dental irrigation syringes*

Point the curved syringe tip at the pockets with the stones but make sure your head is down for the stones to fall out the mouth. You should make a mixture in the syringe from equal parts of water and 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide eases the stone removal as it creates environment for the bacteria so they can’t thrive.

*Oral irrigator*

It has water reservoir, motor and water flosser nozzle. To remove the stones, you should place the nozzle at the tonsil crevices. Then, blast them out, but make sure you do not hurt the tonsils and set this irrigator on lowest setting.

*Oral probiotics*

The strains of good bacteria can suffocate the bad bacteria that cause tonsil stones. S. salivarius K12 is the most effective probiotic against the stones. Take the capsule and open it. Then, mix it in warm water (4oz) and stir until dissolved. After that, swish the mixture in the mouth. To do it close to the stones, tilt the head back before you spit it out. Toothpastes and chewing gums can help in removing the tonsil stones, too.
