The Maca powder comes from a root of the brassica family (mustard) and the watercress, cabbage and turnip and part of this group. The 1st use of the powder is by the Incans who used this root as a natural super food. They cultivated it in the Andes Mountains in Peru.

This civilization called it Peruvian ginseng as it is rich in numerous phytochemicals, around twenty essential fatty acids, complex alkaloids, tannins and amino acids, carbohydrates, fiber, proteins, minerals and vitamins. The Incan ritual for the imperial warriors was to eat maca before the battles to boost the stamina, strength, libido and fighting spirit. It is used nowadays by the bodybuilders and athletes to improve the stamina, strength and performance. This vegetable is proved to restore hormonal imbalances in women and men (especially women in menopause).

Maca powder for women:

-It regulates hormonal imbalance. It is regarded as endocrine adaptogen and diindolymethane(DIM) is one such ingredient. It is found in some cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli and sprouts. It also has anti-cancer properties for some types of cancer.

A study from 2007 showed that maca improved the glucose tolerance and lowered the glucose levels in the blood in people who consumed it regularly for 2 week.

It protects from hypertension and hyperglycemia associated with type-2 diabetes. One study have found that it can prevent the hypertension relevant ACE (angiotensin I-converting enzyme).

A type of maca, red maca was found to suppress the growth of prostate and reduce its size, which means it is a potent alternative for treating BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia).
