If you have ever been into a new age book shop or a yoga studio, you may’ve noticed that there is sometimes a particular smell. These places practice a Native American tradition called smudging, that uses sacred herb’s smoke to purify the room. It is similar to the burning incense. The smudging is commonly linked to sage, but there are other herbs that can provide that benefit and more.

The bay leaves are associated with the Roman and Greek folklore and Caribbean and Indian cuisine and culture. They are not only used in fairytales and food but used as fragrance ingredient in detergents, soaps, perfumes, lotions and creams.

Traditionally, bay leaves are used as anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, analgesic and sedative. They have also anti-fungal and antibacterial properties and it lowers the heart rate and blood pressure. It can manage the levels of cholesterol and glucose in people with diabetes and prevent kidney stones. If taken as tea, it can prevent the spread and growth of Leukemia and cause apoptosis in cancerous cells.

These leaves can be used in cooking and get all of its benefits, but make sure that you get them out before serving because that can be a chocking hazard. If you feel like you are in a bad mood or stressed, burn 1-2 leaves in aluminum baking tray and lave for 10 minutes. Close the windows and keep away the tray from flammable things like linens, wood or paper.

When you will be back, the smoke will make the muscles and mind feel relaxed and you will be doing your tasks easier. When done, just dispose the ashes outside.
